Accident guide
What to do after a car accident in Maryland
A simple checklist for drivers in Waldorf and Southern Maryland. Save it on your phone or print it for your glove box.
1
At the scene
- Check that everyone is safe. Call 911 if anyone is hurt.
- If the cars can be driven and nobody is hurt, move them out of traffic and turn on your hazard lights.
- Call the police if anyone is hurt, a car can't be moved, or the other driver won't share their details. Ask for the report number.
- Stay calm and don't argue about who caused it. Don't sign anything at the scene.
2
Write down and photograph
- The other driver's name, phone number, license and insurance company with policy number.
- Both license plates, and the make, model and color of each car.
- Photos of both cars from all sides, close-ups of the damage, and the whole scene.
- Names and phone numbers of any witnesses.
3
Within a day
- Call your insurance company to start a claim, even if the other driver was at fault. Write down the claim number.
- If the other driver was at fault, you can also file with their insurance.
- See a doctor if you feel any pain. Some injuries show up later.
4
Getting your car fixed
- Get a free estimate. Send us photos or book a visit.
- You choose where your car is repaired, not the insurance company.
- Ask about a rental car while yours is in the shop.
- Keep every receipt: towing, rental, medical and repair.
